Growing Population in Southern Africa [1995] ZAConAsmRes 637 (4 February 1995)

4 February 1995

GROWING POPULATION IN SOUTHERN AFRICA
LET US KILL THE ROOT OF OUR PROBLEM, ONLY THEN WILL RECONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT BE SUCCESSFULL.
I have brought the contents of my letter under the attention of the previous government more than once, and I hope that my plead will not fall on death ears this time!

I am a very concerned citizen of the R.S.A. and the more I listen to politicians and Agenda programs, the more concerned I become. It seems that the more educated people become, the lest they want to face the problem and tackle it once and for all. Or and 1 hope I am wrong, they ignore their conclence in fear of losing votes (1 believe It was a problem for the previous govern‑ment, but surely It should not be any more!)

Everybody knows what Is meant by reconstruction and development, and I fully support it, but we also know that there are just too many people and not enough resources In our country. We live in an extremely dry country, and my main Issue is food for the masses. PLEASE let us stop the madness while we still are able to do it humanly, and use our God-given brains. After all, humans should only rule on earth; it was never meant that we should survive no matter what we destroy In the process. The truth is however that we are already destroying our own habitat, and, uneccessary to say, ourselves.

Like In Ruanda and the rest of the world we will derenitly face civil war and starvation If we don't act now: STERILIZATIONS can make a difference - all we need is some support to make it worth-while for the individual. The previous government were too keen to put the blame on the black and coloured people, but I know of so many unplanned pregnancies even among highly educated people in the white communities. Sterilizations are expensive so people rather take the risk, and only by the birth of the forth child they would put a stop too It. I am a mother myself and I have not undergone a sterilization because I can't afford It at the moment.

I do not want to go Into the details of unwanted children being born and their chances, nor do I want to spell out to you the cost of government for a mother who falls pregnant, as well as government

expenses as far as the child's education is concerned.

It seems that politicians and the decision-makers concentrate on so called human and Christian solutions for our population‑problems, but one can also argue that starvation and abortions like on the attached pamphlet is definitely not human at all. God gave man a powerful brain so that he could be able to rule on earth, but now man can't or will not accept the responsibility to rule over himself!

THE GREATEST THING ON EARTH YOU CAN LEAVE TO YOUR CHILDREN.......

IS A BETTER EARTH!!! "Wildlife" January 1995

  1. Why can't we pay a women or man an amount to undergo a sterl‑lization? "Finance Week" - January 26 - February 1 mentions an amount of E4 500.00 per year per child for education. Why

not pay a person R10 000 to undergo a sterilization? This
money can be used as a deposit on a house and mean better living conditions to already suffering familyls.

  1. Why do we allow rapists to leave jail with the ability to give life to another unwanted child - they have proven that they are not qualified to act responsible. They are some of the main causers of poverty and child cruelty In this country. If we look at legislation in other countries, for example Spain, then there Is much room for improvement as far as rapists and their punishment is concerned In this country.

  1. Law abiding citizens can still undergo sterilizations out of their own free will - all that needs to be done is to make it attractive for them. The only alternative will be forced sterilizations within the next future of starvation!

The previous government have spent millions to educate people concer‑ning family planning, ahd we have to do something about their failures NOW. We need to take drastic steps to ensure a stop to this endless waste of money and manpower. By making excuses of acceptability to the public and their reactions which has never even been tested scientifically we are only adding fuel to the fire: I really believe that our new government Is In the position to make a difference.

Look into the eyes of an innocent child and use your wisdom so that he or she may respect you for what you have done to ensure a future and better life for all.

LET US SHOW THE WORLD THAT SOUTH AFRICA CARES FOR HER CHILDREN AND THEIR FUTURE.

I thank you.

Your's sincerely

Mrs M. R. du Plessis
