Views on Principles that Should Be Upheld in the New Constitution [1995] ZAConAsmRes 367 (30 January 1995)

30 January 1995

I am writing to express my views as a committed Christian and concerned citizen concerning principles that should be upheld in the new constitution.

I am In support of freedom of speech, particularly in the areas of anti-racialism and freedom of religion. However, I do not consider the right to print, write, broadcast or import violent or pornographic materials to be included in the right of freedom of speech. Such practices are harmful as they cause violent and sexually abusive behaviour, and they should be censored.

I am opposed to the legalisation of homosexual marriages, and the legalisation of homosexual couples adopting children. Each adoptive child has the right to both a mother and a father.

I firmly believe that the right to life should be protected from conception, and I am thus opposed to abortion on demand and a woman's so-called "right to choice".

I believe in an economic policy of laissez-faire to promote an entrepreneurial spirit, bringing economic growth. I also believe that the government should address racial inequalities by providing equal educational and employment opportunities. Large-scale public works projects and training in areas such as primary health care and infant nutrition need to be implemented.
