Citizen Contribution: S. Chan-Sam [1995] ZAConAsmRes 1626 (22 June 1995)

I would like to express my opinion of the absurd notion of creating a Volkstaat. The idea alone is demented, a Volkstaat will not only segregate the people of South Africa even more, but will also furnish the minority in this country with a psychological advantage of which they will make complete utilisation.

Why award a Volkstaat to the Afrikaners of South Africa? if this is done we will be crushing the prospect and ideology of democracy in this country, which until now has been the light at the end of a very dark tunnel.

Watching Future Imperfect recently, a key issue of discussion was "self-determination", which is a basic and essential human right. However, “self-determination" was never granted to the oppressed black

population of this country, they were forced to live, work, eat, drink and relieve themselves where the white man wanted them to.

This was all forgotten when Apartheid died, yet the blacks in this country are Willing to share the land with the whites, in spite of the past. I think the Afrikaners have no say whatsoever, they now, as the blacks did, must live where we want them to.
