Afrikaans as Only Official Language [1995] ZAConAsmRes 1509 (29 May 1995)

29 May 1995

AFRIKAANS AS ONLY OFFICIAL LANGUAGE

We write to ask that Afrikaans be the only official language recognised in the Republic of South Africa.

We motivate this suggestion by saying that 16 million South Africans speak and understand Afrikaans. Less than 10 million people in South Africa understand English. To suggest that English is an international language is untrue: go say that to a Frenchman, German, Chinese or Japanese, to mention but a few, and see what their reaction is.

Furthermore, how culturally honourable the other nine languages in South Africa may be, not one of them can be used in philosophy or science or in literature and is merely district languages notwithstanding the amount of people that will be using it.
