What Should Our Official National Languages Be? [1995] ZAConAsmRes 1350 (21 May 1995)

21 May 1995

What should our official national languages be?

We should have two official languages, Afrikaans and English, as they are understood by most people.

Although certain regions' languages should also be added, for instance KwaZulu/Natal should have a third official regional language - Zulu ‑as a large percentage of the population are living in rural parts. The region including the former Venda should have Venda as a third language. Our children should have the right to be educated in their mother tongue. They should have the right to choose a second language: English or Afrikaans. For instance, a Zulu child educated in Zulu chooses English as second language, but wishing to do a third language, he chooses Afrikaans and therefore speaks, write and understands the two official national languages.

The Afrikaans business world is huge, playing a part in South Africa. Afrikaans is important and South Africans not wishing to learn Afrikaans would enter this business sphere with difficulty.

Do give consideration to Afrikaans - it is not only the language of Whites, but also of many other population groups. Britain also believed that Afrikaans would never survive in South Africa.
I wish you everything of the best in your task.
