Dear Ms
Nyoka,
Thank you for your letter of 23 November, 1994 and for consulting
us on the issue of gender equality.
We have considered the matter of a
Commission on Gender Equality, but are of the opinion that although there is a
need for certain
gender issues to be addressed, this could best be done by a
Human Rights Commission. It is very easy for a women's rights lobby
to
degenerate into an anti-men lobby, and we would not like to see that
happen.
So far as gender issues within our field of operation are
concerned we would be particularly interested in the
following:
* protection of mentally handicapped women from forcible
sterilisation or abortion.
* more sympathetic treatment of women who have
been raped.
* protection of women from uhysical
abuse.
An organisation which you could possibly also consult is
the National Welfare, Social Service and Development Forum, p x 53365,
