24 jANUARY Dear Sir
I vwsh the folIMng two points
to be seriously carefully considered for inclusion in the new
constitution:-
(i)The retention of capital punishment: It is interesting
to note that the death penalty is alive and well in the nwst denwcratic
society
on earth, namely the USA. I wonder if our new democratic government has the
courage to canvass the YWII of the SA electorate
on this issue. From various
newspaper and telephonic polls it wouw appear that the great nwjopity of South
Afficans favour the retention
of the death penalty for seplous crimes,. murder,
murder ofpolicemen, rape, kidnapping, sccual abuse, child abuse
etc.
(ii)the entrenchment of state-aided schools: All the economically
and educationally successful democracies offer state mded education
as a
democratic nght and choice to parents. In fact, the state-aided school is being
used ever-increasingly to allow parents direct
input into the education of their
children, surely their democratic fight. A further truth is that, even in
prosperous econondes,
the state can no longer afford to shoulder the financial
burden of educating ever-increasing popu@ons, less so in our new South
Apica.
Yours faithfully
E.M.Stanley
