The press notice issued by the
Constitutional Court regarding the certification of the Constitution of the
Republic of South Africa
(the Bill) of 1996 refers.
We, the undersigned
organisations, have become aware of press reports stating that a number of
organisations will be opposing certain
provisions of the final Constitution
during the forthcoming certification process by the Constitutional Court. We
believe that these
particular provisions comply with the Constitutional
Principles.
All of the undersigned organisations have a long history of
commitment to the advancement of human rights and are deeply concerned
that the
contentions of these organisations against certain provisions be
rebutted.
It would be most useful if these submissions could be studied
to allow a proper defence of the Bill.
We accordingly wish to apply for
leave from the Court to lodge our written submissions by 10 June, 1996 so as to
deal directly with
the arguments raised in the opposing submissions. In this
manner our participation will be made more useful to the process of deliberation
by the Court.
