We wish to submit the following points that we feel
should be taken into consideration during the preparation of the final
constitution:
1. The Assembly is far too large to be really effective.
We feel that it should be limited in number to at most 300 members.
2.
Each member should represent a constituency so that he would be responsible to
the people living in that constituency.
3 The Constitution should be as
brief as possible and drawn up in simple terms.
4 Much stress has been
given in the past to the rights of individuals. Little or no emphasis has been
paid to the duties of citizens
to their neighbours and to the State. It seems
to us that rights should only be given in return for accepting responsibilities
as
a citizen. By this we mean:
Uphold the Constitution and the laws of
the land.
Obey the laws/regulations of the legally-established
authorities, (such as taxi drivers being obliged to adhere to traffic
laws).
Have a duty to assist the police in the exercise of their
work.
Respect the rights of other citizens; ( not ot try forcefully to
coerce others to agree with you, such as trade union members tend
to do
).
Honourably discharge your duties to your
employers/employees in terms of any agreements.
Pay lawfully-imposed
taxes and other charges.
