20 February 1995
Dear Sirs,
I am writing to you to express my personal disgust at your decision to
legalize pornography. I wish you to understand that this is the type of
legislation that is the foundation of the destruction of the society
that has
been fought for so many years. The injustices of the past were glaring, and
particularly so in retrospect; and I believe
that this decision will be see to
be likewise in the not too distant future.
Man is a moral being. There
is no man on this planet who has no 'moral motions', but as is easily seen there
is no universal law
of morality that man can draw from himself (or nature as it
is both cruel and non-cruel). Therefore the source of moral absolutes
must come
from outside ourselves. As a Christian that absolute standard comes from God
himself, and from his self revelation in
the Bible.
This is not an
objection that is based on some emotional, or personal existential truth that is
only relevant to me. We all live
in God's universe and are accountable to Him
as our creator, whether or not we accept Him.
As I said this is not a
subjective objection, the nature of pornography is to degrade; both the one who
views it and the object of
their sexual expression. This points us back towards
the animal kingdom, and our physical nature. Man is more that purely physical
as any anthropologist will tell you. Let us try to rise to who we are,
not find supposed commonality with the animals. Sex is beautiful, and is as
truly a
spiritual experience as most people will ever experience, this is not
merely a spiritual feeling, but a spiritual reality.
So I appeal to you
not to allow this legislation to go through. It stands against all that the
government has declared itself to
stand for: the dignity of the individual and
his right to develop to his fullest potential; pornography destroys both of
these.
Yours in sincere distress
