ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION POLICY It is essential
that the "New South Africa" pays attention to the protection of this country's
natural resources, and that such protection
be incorporated in the
Constitution.
It is the fundamental right of every citizen to have clean
water, clean air and food grown in uncontaminated soil. This is a basic
right
and must be protected.
The country derives a huge portion of its foreign
exchange earnings from tourism. Therefore, the game parks and nature reserves
should
be preserved and protected.
In the rural areas, wood is a precious
commodity. In order to prevent deforestation and consequent erosion, the
Government should
institute a policy of reforestation. In the foreseeable
future, there will still be a need for massive quantities of firewood.
The
planting of trees could provide not only employment, but would fulfil this need
and prevent serious erosion from taking place.
South Africa's natural
resources are its wealth, and the heritage of future generations. They must not
be allowed to be squandered.
