Citizen Contribution: S Creed [1995] ZAConAsmRes 402 (30 January 1995)

30 January 1995

Thank you for the opportunity of giving my contribution to the new con‑stitution of South Africa. As a citizen of this country, and as a Chris‑tian, I am very concerned about three things in particular, these being:

  1. Abortion/Right to Life

Life begins at the moment of conception, and each child has the right to life - therefore I am totally opposed to the legalisation of abortion on demand, and feel it would be such a shame if we joined the ranks of other depraved nations who have no standard to uphold in this area.

  1. Freedom of Speech

I strongly support freedom of speech, but feel that it would be to the detriment of the country to allow the media to write, print or display whatever they wish to. There are many innocent children who would be deeply offended and damaged psychologically if this were to be allowed. Once again as a practising Christian and a concerned citizen, this would be extremely offensive to both myself and other Christians. I totally reject the idea of a complete relaxation of censorship and the restrictions on importing pornographic materials, etc. I feel that already through Internet and the various magazines and TV programmes, there has been too much relaxation in this area. Please provide us with a high moral standard in our country - we are looking to you to set a good example.

  1. Sexual Orientation

Not only Christians, but Moslems and many other groups, are vehe‑mently opposed to 'gay rights' and the treatment homosexual rela‑tionships as healthy and normal. They are neither healthy (being one of the biggest reasons for AIDS in the world today, as well as being very unhygienic) and are totally ABnormal. God created men and women to fulfil totally different functions, both sexually and otherwise. It is an abomination to Him and to most human beings, to suggest otherwise. Homosexual 'marriage' is also something that is appalling to the intelligent, normal human being -and I plead with you to not to include such a sadly immoral and abnormal state of affairs into our brand new constitution. We want a constitution we can be proud of, and government we can look up to - we can only do that if you provide a moral base for our country.

Yours faithfully
