Citizen Contribution: Ew Clapham [1995] ZAConAsmRes 384 (30 January 1995)

Eric W Clapham

30 January 1995

As Christians, my wife and I would like to submit our views on some of the proposal on the drafting of our new Constitution.

  1. Freedom of Speech. While we support freedom of speech and the end of the oppressive apartheid stand. point in this area, we do not understand that to mean freedom to write, print or display whatever the media wants to. We do not support total aband‑onment of censorship and the restrictions on the importing of pornographic materials, etc.

· Sexual Orientation. As Christians we are concerned about the trend towards treating homosexual relationships and heterosexual relationships on exactly the same basis and the enshrining of so-called “gay rights" in our Constitution. As Christians, we are totally opposed to homosexual marriages.

· Abortion/Right to Life. Being convinced that life begins at conception and life each child has the right to life, we are totally,' opposed to the legal‑ising, of abortion-on-demand and the "right to choice” encapsulated in the Constitution.
