A Plea that Conservation and Environmental Affairs Be Included in the Final Constitution [1995] ZAConAsmRes 370 (30 January 1995)

30 January 1 995

After listening to a radio programme I wish to make a plea that conservational and environmental affairs be included in the final constitution.

With correct control and by-laws the natural riches of the country will and should be preserved for all South Africans and future generations.

Many problems would also be addressed such as health hazards caused by air, water and noise pollution. (end of page 1)

Proper implementation of by-laws to address the current high road deaths and accidents. Drug and alcohol consumption.

Excessive air pollution, controlled traffic of sea, mines and estuaries,

The flora, fauna, mountains and beaches all along the coast will and should be preserved for all South Africans to enjoy.

Preserve the game reserves, encourage local people to be involved and share in them economically.

Proper implementation of by-laws could address: excessive air pollution, could be reduced by control of traffic especially in residential areas. Also factory waste.

Excessive noise pollution, again traffic control. Reduce hours of pubs closing 1 1 pm. Where loud live bands discos and games tables are supplied owner obliged to install air conditioning and sound proofing. Patrons tested t@for excessive alcohol consumption if driving. Also control of noise in car parks etc. This could reduce drunken driving and road deaths and accidents. Residents less disturbed ‑patrons have less time to over imbibe, will five to enjoy another evening, without harming others. Control mining sites. Preserve mountains, shorelines and areas such as hikes at St. Lucia (end of page 2)

To maintain open spaces and parks in residential areas. Give each area a Green Lung for relaxation and a safe area for children to play.

These measures may go a long way towards improving the health of all residents in the country and reduce the present high cost and loss of working days. Also safeguard the unique natural accents of the lovely land.

I remain
