Theme Committee 1: Democracy [1995] ZAConAsmRes 21 (5 January 1995)

5 Jan 95

Dear Sir

Theme Committee 1 - Democracy

PUBLIC CONTACT WITH PARLIAMENT

The newly emancipated people of the Republic of South Africa have little if any, contact with Parliament.

Proportional Representation, as presently applied, does not cater for a

member of the public to write to an MP, who has a specific constituency responsibility.

I suggest the following.-

A free postcard be made available at all post offices with, on the address side:-

HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY

DEPARTMENT.........

CAPE TOWN

on the other side:-

a. Lines on which to write

b. The words HOME ADDRESS\POSTAL ADDRESS in the top right hand corner.

c Date line

d. Left of the first line “Write\print your question here".

e. Bottom right ' signature'

I hope this will go some way in bringing in the public's participation in the running of the country.

Yours sincerely
