23 June 1995 Working overtime and slackening of domestic life. I
apologise for writing to you at this late stage, but it is of utmost
importance.
The main reason I am against working overtime, is that it
interferes with an important part of one's personal life, viz. your domestic
life.
I have first-hand experience of this in my own life and also that
of a close relative. My brother and his wife are divorced. For
many years he
worked a 12-hour day and a 7-day week. Others who worked with me also
experienced family and marital problems. Those
who were single had problems in
their love relationships. Parents are not able to educate their children
properly‑. There
is no time in normal domestic life.
Another
important point: there are too many unemployed people in the country for others
to be allowed to work overtime.
