Censorship [1995] ZAConAsmRes 1079 (15 March 1995)

Captain B V Hill RD RNR

15 March 1995
CENSORSHIP

On 12 March, the Sunday Times (Page 17) displayed a full page advertisement on behalf of SATV I as follows:-

THREE CRIMES WILL TAKE PLACE IN YOUR HOMES THIS SATURDAY - Programmes at 1900, 2030 and 2130hrs.

How can we hope ever to establish a peace-loving Nation under such exhibitionism?

60% of the time one switches on a TV set, there is the continual bombardment - mainly American - of blood and guts, police sirens and car chases, knives, guns, shooting, murders, violence, etc., etc. The minds of our youth are being perverted by all this to such an extent that they are led to believe that this Is the normal way of life - The Liverpool child murder case was proved to be a result of TV violence. Surely we all have a better future thin this,

1, therefore, earnestly implore the Constitutional Assembly to give the matter their very serious consideration to include in the New Constitution the BANNING of all TV programmes, films and videos depicting all forms of violence now in circulation in this country.

For your information, I have already discussed my objections with Senior Officers of the Western Province Crime Prevention Services of the SAPS who have assured me that they are furthering the matter with Lieutenant-General Beukes and the WP Minister of Law and Order,

To my mind, unless immediate action is taken and without your support in the banning, the SAPS and the security of the nation do not have a chance nor any hope of eradicating crime and overcoming the problems caused by the rot.

Your positive attention is sought and acknowledgement and your comments would be appreciated.
