ACT NO. 8, 1996 PARLIAMENTARY AND PROVINCIAL MEDICAL AID SCHEME AMENDMENT ACT, 1996


It is hereby notified that the President has assented to the following Act, which is hereby published for general information:

ACT


To amend the Parliamentary and Provincial Medical Aid Scheme Act, 1975, so as to delete or substitute certain obsolete expressions; and to extend the compulsory membership of the Parmed Medical Aid Scheme; and to provide for matters connected therewith.

BE IT ENACTED by the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, as follows:-

Substitution of section 1 of Act 28 of 1975, as substituted by section I of Act 61 of 1976 and amended by section 1 of Act 107 of 1984 and section 1 of Act 21 of 1987

1. The following section is hereby substituted for section 1 of the
Parliamentary and Provincial Medical Aid Scheme Act, 1975:

"Compulsory membership of Parmed Medical Aid Scheme of certain persons

1. Every person who is or becomes


(a) while not being a member of either the **House of**
<<National>> Assembly or the **House of Representatives or the House of Delegates** <<Senate, an Executive Deputy President or>> a Minister **or Deputy Minister**;

(b) **an Administrator of a province** <<a judge of the
Constitutional Court;>>

(c) a judge of the Supreme Court of South Africa in a permanent capacity;

(d) a member of the **House of** <<National>> Assembly <<or>> of the **House of Representatives, of the House of Delegates or of the President's Council or of a provincial council** <<Senate>>;
(e) **while not being a member of a provincial council, a member of the executive committee of a province** <<a member of a provincial legislature in a case where the provincial legislature concerned has resolved that this Act shall apply to its members>>;

(f) any other office-bearer in the service of the Republic approved by the **State** President for the purposes of this Act and made known by **him by notice** <<proclamation>> in the Gazette, shall, for as long as he or she holds that office or
post, be a member of the Parmed Medical Aid Scheme, subject to the rules of that medical aid scheme as registered in accordance with the provisions of the Medical Schemes Act, 1967 (Act No. 72 of
1967): Provided that if any person and his or her spouse both qualify for compulsory membership of the said Scheme in terms of this section, only one of them shall be obliged to be such a member.".

Short title

2. This Act shall be called the Parliamentary and Provincial Medical Aid
Scheme Amendment Act, 1996.
